The Performance Coach Development Programme (PCDP) underpins the High Performance Framework. The PCDP supports the coaching communities of the National Squads and Talent Development Programme.
Further to working with Ollie Dudfield, basketballscotland is currently working to pilot a framework of development opportunities for High Performance Coaches.
The aim of the programme is to harness the expertise and experience within Scotlands coaching community and facilitate the sharing of this expertise.
This programme recognises that supporting Scotland’s High Performance Programme coaches is vital to achieving the dual vision of Scottish National Team success and Great Britain selection for Scottish players.
Support Framework
The following initiatives are being piloted:
1. National Squad Honorarium’s
basketballscotland are delighted to be able to extend honorariums to national squad coaches and managers. While the coaches and managers can't possibly be fully compensated for the voluntary contribution they make, basketballscotland hopes that the gesture acknowledges, in some small way, the work that they do.
2. National Squad Open Sessions
Although many National Coaches have an open-door policy towards club coaches attending national squad sessions, basketballscotland believe that there is value in identifying a small number of sessions for targeted promotion. The basis of the initiative is to open selected sessions to TDP and other community coaches.
The objectives of this initiative are:
-
Promote the expertise within the Scotland programmes
-
Ensure a wider pool of coaches are exposed to the level and requirements of national squad programming
-
Deliver additional development opportunities for community coaches
Open sessions would not take a formal clinic format. Rather open sessions would involve:
-
Observation of the National Squad Session
-
Copy of the session plan for the session attended
-
Q&A session at the end of the observation
3. Coach Development Support
This season the following development activities are being offered to coaches:
Coaching Matters
High Performance Coaches will be provided with the opportunity to attend FREE coach development seminars which are run as part of the Coaching Matters programme. Examples of seminars run to date include: Coaching Practice, Competition and Performance Analysis. Details of all seminars will be emailed to HIgh Performance Coaches on confirmation. The most recent session delivered by Chris Spice focused on Tournament Preperation.
Level 3 Coaching Certificate
National Squad Head Coaches will be offered the opportunity to complete their Level 3 Coaching Certificates.
High Performance Workshop and basketballscotland National Clinic
National Squad coaches will continue to be offered free places at the National Clinic.
Great Britain Links
basketballscotland have been liaising with British Basketball staff to facilitate opportunities for Scotland coaches to gain access to the emphasis and requirements of the GB programmes. An outcome of this relationship has been the attendance by British Basketball coaches at recent basketballscotland workshops and sessions. Additionally through these programmes basketballscotland will be able to support a selected number of head coaches to attend upcoming GB camps. Once GB dates are confirmed this will be communicated to head coaches.
The Peak, Stirlinghosted the Great Britain Senior Women training camp in June. National Squad Coaches were provided with the opportunity to watch world-class, Olympic coaches’ Tom Maher and Ken Shields.
