No event
celebrates the UK-wide appeal of BUCS quite like the biennial Home
Nations Tournament. This exciting and unique event pits squads of
sportsmen and
women from English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh Universities
against one
another in some of BUCS’ most popular sports across three days of
intense
competition.
This
celebration of performance level student sport (formerly known as BUGS)
this year returns to the City of Edinburgh – the site of five previous
editions
of the event. As in 2008, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities have
kindly
donated their facilities to the tournament providing the participants
with
access to top class playing arenas.
During the
event 500+ competitors will represent their country of residence
with the ultimate aim of being crowned BUCS Home Nations champions. The
sports
being contested in 2010 are as follows:
Basketball
(M+W)
Football (M+W)
Hockey
(M+W)
Netball
(W)
Rugby 7s (M+W)
SUS Sports
Manager Stew Fowlie said: “The SUS network is delighted to be
hosting this prestigious event in Edinburgh and is looking forward to
welcoming
colleagues from across the UK. Volunteers from across the SUS network
will be
on hand to help make a good event great. Our aim is to provide the
competitors
and visitors with a memorable and enjoyable week.”
English
Universities will begin the tournament as overwhelming favourites,
having never failed to lift the overall trophy since the inception of
the event
in 1993. However, they can be guaranteed stiff competition from their
Celtic
counterparts, each of whom won at least one of the individual
disciplines in
2008.
For further
information about the Home Nations 2010 please keep an eye on www.bucs.org.uk/homenations.
Between
12 - 15 April you will also be able to access live results and daily
updates
from Edinburgh and be able to support Scotland.
