British Basketball has appointed Tom Maher, who
steered Australia to two Olympic medals, as their new head coach.
The
Australian-born coach has an impressive Olympic CV with women's teams, and none
more so than with hosting nations. Having already won bronze at Atlanta 1996
with Australia he then guided them to silver four years later in Sydney, in
front of a passionate and patriotic crowd.
At the Athens Games he helped
New Zealand to finish eighth, their highest ever finish, before arguably his
greatest achievement, of taking the Chinese team from nowhere to fourth in
Beijing.
The Great Britain women's team's hopes of qualifying for London 2012 received a boost following the Board of FIBA Europe's decision to reinstate them as a Division A team.
The British side were promoted to Europe's top division following an undefeated six games in 2007, but last year the narrowest of defeats to Germany, of 74-72, ultimately saw them thrown into a relegation round in January of this year.
